SIL provider registration: what to check after 1 October

If you or someone you love lives with Supported Independent Living (SIL), SIL provider registration is now worth checking. You want to know the people supporting you at home have been properly checked, so here’s where things stand.

As at 5 October 2026. General information only, not legal, financial or medical advice. Rules can change, so check the official sources below.

In short

  • SIL providers now need to be registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. The rules started on 1 July 2026.
  • Unregistered SIL providers had until 1 October 2026 to apply. A provider that chose not to apply must stop providing SIL.
  • Your NDIS plan and funding don’t change because of this.
  • If you choose and manage your own support workers, that isn’t SIL, and this change doesn’t apply to you.

What changed with SIL provider registration

SIL is a package of home and living support for people with higher support needs, who need support at all times of the day or most of the day. The NDIS Commission identified it as a higher-risk area, so registration became mandatory.

A registered SIL provider has to pass certification audits, meet the NDIS Practice Standards (including a new SIL module), and meet other conditions such as worker screening and managing incidents. The Commission says providing SIL without registration is a serious offence.

Who it affects

Participants who receive SIL and their families, and every provider delivering it, including sole traders. It is not SIL if someone only gets a few hours of support a day or week, or chooses and manages their own workers.

What you can do now

  1. Ask your SIL provider directly: are you registered, or did you apply before 1 October 2026?
  2. Check for yourself on the NDIS Commission’s Provider Register. It takes about two minutes, and our step-by-step guide shows you how.
  3. If your provider isn’t registering, the NDIA says it will help you understand your options and find a new provider. You can call the NDIA on 1800 800 110.

How Kinship can help

Even the thought of having to move can unsettle a whole household. Home is where routines, trust and relationships live, and none of that is easy to rebuild.

Kinship is a registered NDIS provider (4-GWVHCEY) and is registered to deliver Supported Independent Living. We’ve worked in disability and aged care since 2017, and we know consistency matters most at home. If you’re weighing up your options, call us to talk about current availability. You can also see our full list of NDIS services and the areas we cover.

If you’d like us to help with this, call 0437 733 744 and we’ll talk it through. Or send us a note through our get support page, whichever is easier for you.

Common questions

Will my NDIS plan change if my SIL provider isn’t registered?

No. The NDIA says your plan and funding will not change. If your provider does not register, you will need to move to a registered provider, and the NDIA will help you understand your options.

Does SIL provider registration apply if I manage my own support workers?

No. If you choose and manage your own support workers, including directing, planning and rostering them, it is not SIL and the registration change does not apply to you.
