NDIS plan renewal from February 2027: no more rollover

If you’ve been carefully keeping part of your budget aside for later, the move to NDIS plan renewal matters to you. From 1 February 2027, unspent funds won’t carry over when your plan is renewed.

As at 5 October 2026. General information only, not legal, financial or medical advice. Rules can change, so check the official sources below.

In short

  • From 1 February 2027, a “plan renewal” replaces the “plan continuation” many participants get now.
  • At your reassessment date, your plan will either be reassessed by an NDIA planner, or renewed with the same supports as your old plan.
  • Unspent funds from the previous plan won’t be carried over.
  • From the same date, the reductions to community participation and daily living skills budgets also apply at renewal.

What an NDIS plan renewal is

Under the new NDIS laws, when your plan reaches its reassessment date, one of two things happens. An NDIA planner reassesses it, or a new plan is created with the same supports as the old one. That second option is called a plan renewal.

The Department of Health, Disability and Ageing says a renewed plan is set at the level you were assessed for, adjusted for current prices. What it won’t include is anything left unspent from the plan before.

Who it affects

Every participant whose plan comes up for reassessment from 1 February 2027, and especially anyone who has been underspending, whether by choice or because they couldn’t find the right provider. Plan managers and support coordinators will want to look at this early too.

What you can do now

  1. Look at the funding periods in your plan. New and reassessed plans now include them, to help your funding last the full length of the plan.
  2. Check what you’ve used and what you haven’t, with your plan manager if you have one.
  3. If supports aren’t being used because you can’t find a provider, or the plan no longer fits, tell your NDIS contact now rather than at renewal.
  4. If your needs have changed in a significant and lasting way, you can still ask for a plan reassessment.

How Kinship can help

Many families underspend for a good reason. They’re careful, or they’ve been let down before and don’t want to rush into the wrong provider. Losing that buffer can feel unsettling.

Kinship is a registered NDIS provider (4-GWVHCEY) and has worked in disability and aged care since 2017. If you’re still looking for support you trust, we provide daily living support, community participation and respite, with the same support worker every visit, and we’re happy to talk. See our NDIS services for the full list.

If you’d like us to help with this, call 0437 733 744 and we’ll talk it through. Or send us a note through our get support page, whichever is easier for you.

Ask us: got a question about this change? Email info@kinshipunitingservices.com or call 0437 733 744, and we’ll answer it in plain English.
