Respite care in Western Sydney

A few hours where someone you trust takes over. A familiar Kinship support worker steps in at home or takes the person you care for out, so you can rest, get to your own appointments or simply have the afternoon.

  • Registered NDIS provider (4-GWVHCEY)
  • Same support worker every visit
  • In-home and community respite, NDIS-funded or booked privately

What respite is

Someone else takes over, so you can have a break

That’s how Carer Gateway puts it. Respite can be a few hours a week or something longer, and it can happen at home, in the community, at a centre or in residential care.

Kinship’s part of that is the first two: support at home and out in the community. The person you care for spends the time with someone they know, doing what they’d normally do or something they enjoy. You get time that’s actually yours.

What we offer

Respite with a familiar face

Respite only works if the person you care for is comfortable. That’s why the same support worker comes each time.

At home

In-home respite

A support worker comes to the house and keeps the day running: routines, meals, personal care and company. You can leave, or rest in the next room.

Out and about

Community respite

An outing to the library, the pool, the shops or a class, with the same worker each time. The house is quiet for a while.

Community participation →
Higher needs

Complex needs are everyday work

If the person you care for needs complex bowel care, catheter care, wound care, PEG feeding, medication management, or dementia and behaviour support, our team delivers these as high intensity supports.

What we don’t provide

Kinship doesn’t run a respite house, cottage or overnight centre. If you’re looking for short-term accommodation (STA) away from home, your support coordinator, my NDIS contact or Carer Gateway can help you find a provider.

NDIS participants

Respite under an NDIS plan

The NDIS doesn’t have one thing called “respite”. There are two common routes, and they’re easy to mix up.

What Kinship provides

A support worker at home or in the community

The NDIS lists a support worker in your home as one option alongside short-term accommodation. If your plan funds help at home or community participation, a Kinship support worker can step in while your carer takes a break. What you can use depends on your plan, so check it with your support coordinator or my NDIS contact.

A separate NDIS support

Short-term accommodation (STA)

STA gives a participant time apart from their usual care arrangements while carers take a short break. The NDIS says it’s usually funded for up to 28 days a year, used flexibly, for example in blocks of up to 14 days or one weekend a month. Kinship doesn’t run STA accommodation.

The NDIS says STA may be funded if you live with your primary informal supports, such as family or a carer, or get daily drop-in support, and receive disability-related support from them for more than 6 hours a day. Older people

Caring for an older parent or partner

Government-funded respite for older people is arranged through My Aged Care on 1800 200 422. Our CHSP funding covers domestic assistance only, in Northern Sydney and the Southern Highlands, so it doesn’t include respite.

Aged care →

My Aged Care says respite for older people can be at home, in the community or in an aged care home. Respite at home and community respite are provided under the Commonwealth Home Support Program and Support at Home. Kinship is applying to deliver Support at Home and can’t take clients under it yet. FAQ

Questions carers ask us about respite

What is respite care?

Carer Gateway describes respite as someone else taking care of the person you care for, so you can have a break. It can be a few hours a week or longer, and it can happen at home, in the community, at a centre or in residential care. Kinship provides respite at home and in the community.

Does the NDIS fund respite?

Not under that name. The NDIS funds short-term accommodation (STA), which gives a participant time apart from their usual care arrangements, and it also lists a support worker in your home as another option. If your plan funds help at home or community participation, a Kinship support worker can step in while you take a break. Check what your plan covers with your support coordinator or my NDIS contact.

Do you offer overnight respite or short-term accommodation (STA)?

Kinship doesn’t run a respite house, cottage or overnight centre. Our respite is in-home and community-based. If you need short-term accommodation away from home, your support coordinator, my NDIS contact or Carer Gateway can help you find a provider.

Can I book respite privately, without NDIS funding?

Yes. Anyone can book Kinship privately, with no referral or plan needed. Call for a quote, and the final price is confirmed in writing before any booking.

I care for an older parent. Can Kinship provide aged care respite?

Not under our own government funding. Our CHSP funding covers domestic assistance only, in Northern Sydney and the Southern Highlands. Government-funded respite for older people is arranged through My Aged Care on 1800 200 422. Kinship is applying to deliver Support at Home but can’t take clients under it yet. You can still book us privately.

What if I need respite in an emergency?

Call Carer Gateway on 1800 422 737. Carer Gateway says you can call at any time for help with emergency respite if you suddenly can’t provide care, for example because you’re ill or injured.

Will it be the same support worker each time?

Yes. That’s how we work. A named support worker starts, and the same person keeps coming, so the person you care for is with someone they know.

Where do you provide respite?

We’re based in Colebee and work across Sydney, especially Blacktown, The Ponds, Marsden Park, Schofields, Quakers Hill, Box Hill, Kellyville, Rouse Hill, Stanhope Gardens, Riverstone and Windsor. If you’re further out, call and we’ll tell you plainly whether we can staff it.
