Hoarding clean-up, at your pace

When a home has become hard to live in, the hardest part is often picking up the phone. We work privately and without judgement, alongside the person and the people supporting them, one area at a time.

  • Private and discreet, no judgement
  • We assess first and tell you honestly what we can do
  • Final price confirmed in writing before any booking
How we work

The person whose home it is comes first

Hoarding is not laziness, and it’s not a cleaning problem with a quick fix. Healthdirect describes hoarding disorder as finding it very hard to get rid of things, even when they don’t have much value (healthdirect: hoarding disorder). It also notes that simply clearing the rubbish away for someone won’t solve the problem, and the clutter often builds up again.

So we don’t turn up with a skip and a deadline. We talk with the person first. We agree which area to start with and what happens to things before anything moves. Nothing is thrown out without their say-so, and we’ll agree this with you in writing.

Discretion

Private

No photos without permission. How we handle privacy is agreed with you in writing.

Pace

At their pace

Short sessions or a plan over several visits, at a pace the person is comfortable with.

Together

With family and supports

We’re glad to work with a family member, carer, case worker or landlord, with the person’s agreement.

Honesty about hazards

We assess first, and we’ll tell you if it’s not a job for us

Before we quote, we need to understand what’s in the home. If we find sharps, significant mould, pests, large amounts of rotting food or biological waste, or anything that looks like structural damage, we’ll say so plainly. Some of those need a specialist cleaner, pest controller or tradesperson, and we’ll recommend one.

We are not a biohazard, trauma or forensic cleaning service, and we’ll say so early if that’s what a home needs.

Support for the person

Cleaning helps the home. Support helps the person.

This is general information, not medical advice. If you think you or someone you love may be living with hoarding disorder, Healthdirect suggests talking to a doctor. A GP is a good first step and can talk about treatment and referrals. Healthdirect’s helpline is 1800 022 222.

For older people, My Aged Care lists hoarding and squalor assistance, including care planning and one-off clean-ups, available through the Commonwealth Home Support Programme after an aged care assessment (My Aged Care: hoarding and squalor assistance). That is a separate service from ours. Kinship’s CHSP grant covers domestic assistance only, in Northern Sydney and the Southern Highlands.

How booking works

Four steps, and nothing is booked until you’ve seen the price

Step 1

Call us

Ring 0437 733 744 or 0424 756 143. Tell us the suburb, the size of the home and the date you’re working to.

Step 2

Show us the job

A short description or a few phone photos is usually enough for us to see what the work really involves.

Step 3

Get a written quote

After we’ve assessed the home, we write down what we’ll do, over how many sessions, and the price. The final price is confirmed in writing before any booking.

Step 4

Book your date

Once you’re happy with the quote, we lock in the day and agree how we’ll get access.

FAQ

Questions people ask before calling us

Will you judge me or my family member?

No. Homes get this way for all kinds of reasons, and it isn’t ours to judge. Our job is to help make it safer and more liveable, in a way the person can live with.

Will you throw things away without asking?

No. We agree with the person what stays, what goes and what’s donated before anything moves. If they’re unsure about something, it goes in a “decide later” pile, not the bin.

I’m worried about a family member. Can I arrange it for them?

You can call us to talk it through. We’ll only start work with the agreement of the person whose home it is. Clearing a home without them usually doesn’t last, and it can damage trust.

Can it be kept private from the neighbours?

We keep it as low-key as we can, and we’ll agree with you in writing who we can talk to about your home. Tell us about any worries at the first call and we’ll plan around them.

How long will it take?

That depends on the size of the home, how much is there and the pace the person is comfortable with. Some homes are a few sessions; others are a plan over weeks. We’ll give you an honest estimate after the assessment.

What if there are needles, mould, pests or structural damage?

We’ll tell you plainly. Some hazards need a specialist cleaner, pest controller or builder, and we’ll recommend that rather than take on work we shouldn’t. We are not a biohazard or trauma cleaning service.

The landlord has given a deadline. Can you help?

Call us as soon as you can and tell us the date. We’ll be honest about what’s realistic in that time, and we’re happy to talk with the landlord or agent if the tenant agrees.
